The District Attorney is responsible for prosecuting crimes within the county’s borders. To do this, the Office of the Bronx District Attorney employs nearly 400 assistant district attorneys and more than 400 support staff, including, but not limited to, clerical personnel, stenographers, interpreters, crime victims advocates, video technicians, detective investigators, finance personnel and computer technicians. All office personnel are assigned to the Executive Staff, a prosecutorial department, the Senior Staff, an enforcement unit or a support unit.
Overall responsibility for office operations is vested in the District Attorney and the Executive Staff, which is comprised of the Chief Assistant District Attorney, the Counsel to the District Attorney, two Executive Assistant District Attorneys, an Administrative Assistant District Attorney, the Administrative Chief/EEO Coordinator and the Chief Financial Officer. (The function of each organizational unit within the Office is briefly explained in the Organizational Glossary.)
Screening, investigation, and prosecution of crime complaints are generally allocated among the following seven departments within the Office: the Appeals Bureau, the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, the Criminal Court Bureau, the Domestic Violence Bureau, the Gang Prosecution/Major Case Bureau, the General Crimes Division, the Investigations Division, and the Narcotics Bureau. While each of these departments has a distinct function, the work of the Office is accomplished most effectively by their collaboration.
The responsibility for daily supervision of legal and support staff assigned to these departments belongs to the division, bureau and unit chiefs, their deputies and supervisors. The District Attorney has designated certain members of the legal staff within these departments as Senior Trial, Senior Appellate or Senior Investigative Attorneys. The District Attorney has further assigned certain trial, appellate and training responsibilities to the six members of the Senior Staff, who are not specifically assigned to any department. The Senior Attorneys and the members of the Senior Staff average nearly 20 years of prosecutorial experience and handle matters that are particularly serious, sensitive and complex.
