TYPES OF LAWYERS
PRIVATE LAWYERS- These are attorneys that are hired by the client and paid only by the client to represent them in court. They do not accept payment from the state or the court to represent defendants. The Law Offices of Michael S. Discioarro, LLC is a private law firm and does not accept cases from the court or the state.
LEGAL AID- Bronx Legal Aid is an agency that has contracted with New York City to represent those in the Bronx charged with crimes that cannot afford to hire their own attorneys. In order to qualify you must meet income limits andthe attorneys are on a salary which is paid by the Bronx Legal Aid Society.
BRONX DEFENDERS- The Bronx Defenders arose out of a dispute with Mayor Giuliani.They are the same type of lawyers as legal aid. They are paid by the state to represent those accused of crimes who cannot afford to hire an attorney,
18-B Lawyers- These lawyers are a hybrid. They are lawyers who are paid by the court to defend those accused of crimes who cannot afford to hire their own attorneys. They can also take on clients who can pay. When the case is over, they submit a voucher to the Judge which he must approve before they are paid by the State of New York.
